Brazilian Communist Party confirms Costa-Santos presidential ticket

The Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) held its National Electoral Convention this Saturday, August 1st, at the plenary hall of the São Paulo City Council, confirming the candidacy of Edmilson Costa for President of the Republic and Cleusa Santos as vice-president.

With the presence of party activists, the convention carried out a political act reaffirming the party's program for the elections, featuring speeches from the candidates confirmed in São Paulo and Minas Gerais.

In his address, Edmilson Costa reiterated that the PCB's candidacy stands for the construction of popular power and socialism, presenting the five pillars of the campaign for the country's revolutionary transformation.

The PCB presented proposals that make up the platform of its ticket for the electoral race. Among them are:

• The nationalization of the financial system and the creation of a Workers' Bank;

• The suspension of public debt payments;

• The renationalization of strategic companies;

• The end of the 6×1 work schedule and the reduction of the weekly working hours to 30 hours with no wage cuts;

• Quality education and healthcare for all people; appreciation of professionals and guarantee of universal access to public services; an end to outsourcing and privatization;

• The repeal of counter-reforms; the establishment of a Social Responsibility Law;

• A unicameral parliament and the abolition of the Senate; popular participation in political decision-making;

• Internationalist solidarity with peoples aggrieved by the actions of the US and Israel. Full support for Palestine, Socialist Cuba, the people of Iran, and Venezuela. Down with imperialism!

Who is Edmilson Costa?

Edmilson Costa is a lifelong activist for the socialist cause since his youth. He was a student leader and was persecuted during the business-military dictatorship from 1964 to 1985, and was present in all movements defending democratic freedoms, popular power, and national sovereignty.

Holding a PhD in Economics from Unicamp, with a postdoctoral fellowship at the same institution's Institute of Philosophy and Human Sciences, Edmilson is the author of several works on contemporary capitalism and the global economic crisis, such as his most recent Reflections on the Brazilian Crisis (Revolutionary Sciences Press, 2020) and A Profile of Brazilian Youth (Caio Prado Júnior Institute, 2025), in addition to poetry books.

Who is Cleusa Santos?

Cleusa Santos is a retired full professor from the School of Social Work at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, holding a PhD in Social Work from the Pontifical Catholic University of São Paulo. She served in various roles within the Brazilian Association of Teaching and Research in Social Work, contributing to the defense of a critical, public, secular, and socially committed professional education grounded in Brazilian reality.

She also actively participated in the teachers' movement since 1989, first at UEPG in Paraná, and later at UFRJ, where she served on three boards of ADUFRJ-SSind, the local chapter of ANDES-SN, and chaired the organization from 2002 to 2003.

Currently, she is the political secretary in Santos for the Ana Montenegro Class-Based Feminist Collective, an organization linked to the Brazilian Communist Party. This work reaffirms her class-based, feminist, and socialist activism, articulated with the defense of working women, popular organization, and the struggle for an emancipated society.
