Communists in South Africa, Mexico and Croatia condemn Donald Trump's attack on Cuba

The South African Communist Party (SACP), the Communist Party of Mexico (CPM) and the Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia (SRP) are all condemning the disgraceful move by Donald Trump to place Cuba back on the arbitrary and spurious US list of states allegedly sponsoring "terrorism". This comes just days after Joe Biden, who had waited a full four years to so, had finally removed Cuba from that list for the obvious reason that Cuba's inclusion is farcical and based on purely political motives.

Inclusion on the list has done great damage to the Cuban economy and hardship for the Cuban people in addition to all the other aspects of the cruel and illegal US economic blockade.

Wednesday, 22 January 2025: The South African Communist Party (SACP) condemns with the utmost contempt it deserves the newly inaugurated US president Donald Trump’s reinstatement of Cuba into its list of so-called “state sponsors of terrorism”. The reinstatement of Cuba into this fraudulent list reinforces the close to seven-decade-long blockade imposed by the United States government on the Cuban people, a stance that has been repeatedly condemned by the United Nations as a violation of international law and calling upon the US government to remove the blockade.

The irrational executive order signed by Trump moments after his inauguration underscores the unilateral arrogance of the United States’ imperialist regime. The list, compiled without international recognition or any credible evidence, exemplifies this overreach. When it comes to evidence, Trump’s executive order blatantly exposes the baseless inclusion of Cuba, standing in stark contradiction to the truth.

Equally indefensible, Joe Biden’s administration strengthened imperialist aggression against Cuba on various fronts, including perpetuating the same irrational stance, contradicting his campaign commitment. Biden only removed Cuba from the list mere days before his term ended. The government and people of Cuba have stood firm against the United States-led imperialist aggression for over a century. We, the SACP, reaffirm our unwavering solidarity with the people and government of Cuba: the struggle against the US-led imperialist aggression continues.

Contrary to the imperialist United States regime’s narrative, it is a historical fact that it is the United States government itself that has carried out or sponsored acts of terrorism against the people of Cuba, in violation of international law with impunity. Cuba has been a victim of various acts of terrorism, which were overtly or covertly supported by the United States, on the one hand, all while Cuba, on the other, has been one of the leading nations in the genuine fight against terrorism.

Through its economic warfare against the Cuban people, the United States has caused hardships for the Cuban nation, particularly economically, including by blocking access to crucial supplies.

The SACP salutes the brave people and government of Cuba who, with the active support of the overwhelming majority of the people across the globe, continue to be resilient and have stabilised their country’s people-based system. Cuba’s fight is a fight for all of humanity against imperialist domination, exploitation and foreign occupation.

The SACP will continue to support the total lifting of the illegal blockade and calls for the United States to end its occupation of Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay with immediate effect and unconditionally.

The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia (SRP) strongly condemns the decision of the United States of America to re-introduce Cuba to the list of state sponsors of terrorism, as well as the continuation of the inhumane economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba. This decision, made by the Donald Trump administration at the very beginning of its mandate, represents an unjust and politically motivated measure directed against the sovereignty of the Cuban people and their right to independent development.

The US decision is not based on real facts or evidence of Cuba's involvement in terrorist activities. On the contrary, Cuba has been known for many years as a promoter of international cooperation, health assistance and the fight for social justice, especially through the sending of medical teams to numerous crisis-stricken countries around the world.

The blockade of Cuba, which has lasted for more than six decades, is one of the longest-lasting and most inhumane examples of collective punishment of a country in modern history. It not only causes enormous economic damage, estimated at hundreds of billions of dollars, but also directly threatens the lives and well-being of the Cuban people. In addition to making access to basic necessities difficult, the embargo prevents Cuba from obtaining medicines, medical equipment and technologies that are critical to combating disease.

SRP points out that this move by the USA is another act of imperialist aggression based on double standards and violation of international law. We remind you that previous administrations, such as that of Barack Obama, began to take steps towards the normalization of relations with Cuba, including the removal of Cuba from the list of sponsors of terrorism. The Trump administration's decision represents a step back and an attempt to destabilize Cuba for the purpose of political pressure.

The recent decision of the General Assembly of the United Nations (UN) from November 2023 speaks in support of this condemnation, when 187 countries voted for a resolution demanding an immediate end to the economic, trade and financial blockade of Cuba. Only two countries – the United States of America and Israel – voted against the resolution. This voting result clearly shows that the international community recognizes the blockade as an illegitimate and inhumane practice that violates the basic rights of the Cuban people.

The Socialist Workers' Party of Croatia expresses solidarity with the people of Cuba and their revolution and calls on the international community, including the institutions of the United Nations, to condemn these unjust measures. We also call on the government of the Republic of Croatia and the institutions of the European Union to clearly express their disagreement with this policy and to take an active stance against the economic blockade of Cuba.

We are convinced that the Cuban people, guided by the principles of solidarity, justice and sovereignty, will succeed in overcoming these challenges, as they have done in the past. SRP remains with Cuba in the fight against imperialist aggression and for a just world free from hegemony and blackmail.

In the face of imperialist aggressiveness, solidarity

Among the measures approved by Donald Trump, on the first day of his second term as President of the United States, is to return the Republic of Cuba to the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism, from which it had been withdrawn a few days ago, at the end of the Biden administration's term.

This confirms to us that such a list does not meet any legitimate criteria, and that it is only a political weapon to promote sanctions and aggressions. Terrorist groups and operations against the peoples of the world have taken place under the protection of the White House. But operations of the U.S. army have also been true acts of terrorism against the peoples.

The Communist Party of Mexico rejects the inclusion of Cuba in that list. It is a measure that, added to the blockade and other sanctions, seeks the impossible: the surrender of the Cuban people and their Revolution.

We understand it as our duty to increase solidarity with the Cuban Revolution, as part of the Mexican working class's own struggle for its emancipation.

Cuba will win!
