Comrade To Lam elected as General Secretary of Communist Party of Vietnam

The Communist Party of Vietnam reports that Politburo member and President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam To Lam has been elected as General Secretary of the 13th Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), with 100% of the votes.

He replaces the late party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong who died July 19.

The election took place at a meeting in Hanoi on August 3. The meeting was convened by the CPV Central Committee and presided over by Politburo member and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

According to the CPV in "his speech, General Secretary To Lam pledged to inherit and uphold the revolutionary achievements made by late Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and previous generations of leaders.

He vowed to maintain solidarity and unity and, together with the CPV Central Committee, the Politburo, and the Party Central Committee’s Secretariat, resolutely lead and direct the entire Party, people and army to accomplish the goals and tasks set forth by the 13th National Party Congress, successfully organise the 14th National Party Congress, and steadfastly advance the nation's development in the new period."

Granma reports that "To Lam was born in Nghia Tru Commune, Van Giang District, Hung Yen Province. He is a professor and has a doctorate in jurisprudence.

He joined the PCV on August 22, 1981. He was a member of the Central Committee of the PCV for the XI, XII and XIII mandates and a member of the Political Bureau for the XII and XIII mandates.

In addition, he has been a deputy of the National Assembly of the XIV and XV legislatures, deputy minister of Public Security (2010-2016), minister of Public Security (2016-2024) and in January 2019 he was promoted to the rank of General of the People's Public Security Forces of Vietnam.

He has been President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam since 2024."

The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, congratulated To Lam on X.

"We convey the most sincere and warm congratulations to comrade To Lam on his election as General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam. We ratify our firm will to continue deepening the excellent ties between our Parties and peoples," he wrote.
