Cuba maintains its unwavering support for the Palestinian people

By Dayán González Ramírez, Communist Party of Cuba, translated from the Spanish

On January 19, the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas comes into force. This agreement is designed to be implemented in three phases and includes the exchange of Israeli hostages for Palestinian hostages and prisoners.

For more than 15 months, Israel's occupation, with the logistical support and military backing of the United States, has subjected the people of Palestine to genocide and a war of extermination.

Cuba recognizes the enormous efforts of the mediating and guarantor countries to achieve this long-awaited agreement. Cuba has also called for respect and compliance with the agreement, so as to guarantee the arrival of sufficient and effective aid to deal with the unprecedented humanitarian crisis and to restore basic services such as water and electricity. Cuba has also stated that it is vital that the reconstruction of Gaza begins, the conditions for the return of displaced persons are created and the Israeli occupying forces are fully withdrawn.

There have been many examples of Cuba's forceful and unequivocal rejection of the genocide against the Palestinian people. Recently, Cuba submitted a Declaration of Intervention in the Case of Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip to the International Court of Justice.

Indifference to injustice is not a characteristic of the Cuban people, who will always advocate for peace and against genocidal policies anywhere in the world. Together with the international community, Cuba expects the United Nations to act against the impunity of Israel and its accomplices who for decades have massacred innocent civilians, mostly women and children.

Cuba has consistently defended the right of the Palestinian people to the establishment of an independent State, within the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital. The hope that the Agreement reached provide real prospects for a just, permanent and lasting solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict is shared by Cubans and by millions in the world.
