It is with deep sorrow that the Cuban people have learned of the death of Cuba's dear friend, His Excellency Dr. Sam Nujoma, Founding Father and first President of the sister Republic of Namibia.

Throughout his life he demonstrated a special affection for Cuba and support for the Cuban Revolution, from the stage in which he led the heroic Namibian people in the struggle for independence and later, when he assumed the highest leadership of its nascent independent State and also as an African leader, a symbol of firmness in defense of just causes.

He was a fervent promoter of solidarity and cooperation with Cuba and never ceased to recognize and appreciate Cuba's contribution to the struggles for the liberation of Africa and the end of apartheid.

The Cuban people and Government will always be grateful for his support in the fight against the blockade. In 1991, he was decorated with the José Martí Order, the highest distinction granted by the Cuban State.

The Cuban Party, Government and people extend their most heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of the sister Republic of Namibia, and to his family and friends.

For this reason, Official Mourning is declared from 6:00 a.m. on February 10 until 12:00 p.m. on February 11, 2025 and National Mourning on February 12, 2025, from 6:00 a.m. to 12 p.m.

During the periods of both the Official and the National mourning, the Lone Star Flag will be hoisted at half-mast in public buildings and military institutions.

Likewise, while the National Mourning is in force, public shows and festive activities are suspended.
