The figure of Hugo Chávez, his thoughts and his liberating vision were remembered on Wednesday afternoon (March 5) at the headquarters of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP). In his opening remarks, the ambassador of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Cuba, Orlando Maneiro Gaspar, conveyed the fraternal greetings of President Nicolás Maduro, the Bolivarian government and the Venezuelan people to the Cubans. He also noted that the legacy of the Commander is of great historical significance, representing not only the hope of a more just and equitable world, but also a reminder of the challenges we face when implementing profound changes in a context of internal and external resistance.

On the Cuban side, the first vice president of ICAP, Noemí Rabaza Fernández, highlighted that:
“Today we are here not only to remember; we are here to reaffirm that ideas do not die, that dreams of justice multiply, and that peoples, when united, are invincible. Chávez was not a man: he was an entire people transformed into hope. Chávez and Fidel are two giants on the same path. Chávez was the boy from Barinas who learned to love Bolívar from the roots of the earth, and the soldier who swore not to rest until he saw Latin America free of chains. On that path, he found in Cuba not only an ally, but a mirror, because Fidel, with his audacity and vision, had already shown that a small Caribbean country could challenge the most powerful empire in history and win. Together, Chávez and Fidel wove something more than cooperation: they created a family; a Latin American and Caribbean family that gave life to the dream of Bolívar and Martí.”

The event was attended by Emilio Lozada García, head of the Department of International Relations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, Anayansi Rodríguez, deputy minister of Foreign Affairs, and other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Government and the Communist Party of Cuba. Also present were representatives of the diplomatic corps of several countries accredited in Havana and members of various Cuban institutions.
The path forged by Commander Hugo Chávez in the fight for social justice is a living example for the peoples of Latin America and the world who are still fighting for their liberation.
“Chávez is not dead; he lives in the people of America and in the humble people who fight for a better world,” Commander in Chief Fidel Castro Ruz once said. This powerful message resonates today more than ever, reminding us that Chávez’s legacy transcends his death and is manifested in the resistance and struggle of those who pursue social justice. His spirit lives on in every corner of Latin America, inspiring new generations to continue the search for a more equitable and supportive future.
