Soviet Pioneers in the Latvian SSR, 1985 -- Daily LIFT #1016
The Soviet Pioneers began more modestly with large events and rallies along with youth camping and wilderness activities, but they grew to be a Soviet youth organization that had free programs, camps and even resorts all across the USSR for children and teenagers. There were Pioneer Palaces, where kids came for programs, in almost every major Soviet center. Sadly, with the fall of socialism the whole network was disbanded and many of the camps and palaces were abandoned or converted for private use.
You can learn about the most famous of all Soviet Pioneer camps in our post: Artek: The vast Soviet internationalist complex of children's camps (theleftchapter.com)
