Bethune shown operating under fire in China, 1939. He was working at a mobile hospital unit of the Chinese Communist forces defending against Japanese attacks.
On November 12, 1939 Bethune died as a result of blood poisoning due to a cut he received while operating on a wounded soldier.
In China he is regarded as one of the great heroes of the revolution.
