Red Army liberates the Polish city of Lodz, January 19, 1945 -- Daily LIFT #628
When the Red Army liberated the city they also liberated the Lodz ghetto to which the city's Jewish population had been confined by the Nazis. Of the ghetto's one time population of over 220,000, when the Red Army arrived only approximately 900 remained alive. A few thousand others survived the war in other locations.
