July 21 , 1935. From its very beginning, the young Soviet Republic made friends the world over. Its birth was hailed by Anatole France, Henri Barbusse, John Reed , Bernard Shaw and millions of lesser known people. On this day, at 10.45 P.M., our good friend Romain Rolland was leaving for home after a tour of the country; Maxim Gorky was seeing him off.
