The great Spanish Communist leader Dolores Ibarruri and the monument-ensemble sculptor, laureate of the Lenin Prize E. V. Vuchetich on Mamayev Kurgan -- Daily LIFT #871
Mamayev Kurgan was finally recaptured by the Red Army January 26 1943. This critical height, a strategic point over the whole city, had been the scene of staggeringly brutal combat over the course of the battle. Just 7 days later the Nazis left in the city capitulated.
Ibarruri was in exile in the USSR from fascist Spain during WWII. She was touring the memorial complex The Motherland Calls with its designer while still in exile in the late 1960s.
Her son Rubén died heroically fighting at Stalingrad at the age of 22.
