Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, paid tribute to Commander Raúl Díaz-Argüelles at his grave monument in Angola on August 22 during his visit to the country with which Cuba has strong internationalist ties.
Raúl Díaz-Argüelles is a hero of the Cuban internationalist volunteer military mission to the country that helped save it from imperialist intervention and apartheid South African invasion.
Raúl Díaz-Argüelles arrived in Angola at the head of the Cuban military mission in 1975 and was killed in action December of that year during the Battle of Ebo at the young age of 39.
His courage and sacrifice has made him a hero in both countries.
Díaz-Canel Bermúdez arrived in Angola on Sunday, August 20 as part of his visit to Africa which will include Cuban participation in the BRICS Summit for the first time.
