Via the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba, translated from the Spanish
On Tuesday afternoon (September 24), member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power, Army Corps General Ramón Espinosa Martín, First Deputy Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR), Hero of the Republic of Cuba and of Labor, died suddenly after a brilliant record of service to the Homeland and the FAR.
His body will be cremated, and his ashes will be placed in the Granma room of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, until the funeral honors are held.
Biography
At the age of fifteen he began to work as an agricultural worker. From a very young age, he joined the revolutionary struggle against Batista's tyranny as a member of the "26 de Julio" Movement in the Camajuaní area; in 1958 he rose up in the Escambray, where he made contact with the Revolutionary Directorate "13 de Marzo", concluding the war with the rank of first lieutenant.
After the Triumph of the Revolution he held various responsibilities in the FAR: Chief of 3rd. Special Combat Column, Battalion Chief, Deputy Chief of the Operations Section of the General Staff, Chief of Staff of Division, Chief of the Eastern Army and Deputy Minister of the FAR.
Taking into account his outstanding record of service as a military leader, commitment to the Revolution and its leaders, he was an example in the training of several generations of cadres.
He fulfilled an internationalist mission as Chief of the Troops that defended the enclave of Cabinda, in the People's Republic of Angola, where he was seriously wounded. Even so, due to his far-sighted actions, a crushing defeat was inflicted on the invaders, preserving that strategic region. Subsequently, he again fulfilled his internationalist duty, as Head of the Cuban Military Mission in Ethiopia, in which he carried out effective work; in addition, he undertook other missions entrusted to him abroad.
He studied at the Higher Basic School of the FAR and the Academy of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the USSR "K. E. Voroshilov", where he successfully completed courses in 1979.
As a well-deserved recognition of his career as a revolutionary fighter, and contribution to the cause of internationalism, the Council of State awarded him the Honorary Titles of "Hero of the Republic of Cuba" and "Hero of Labor", as well as the Order "Máximo Gómez". For his services to the Homeland, he received, among other decorations: the Order "Playa Girón", "Antonio Maceo" and "Ernesto Che Guevara" of the First Degree, and the medals of ‟Combatant of the War of Liberation", "of the Clandestine Struggle" and "Internationalist Combatant" First Class.
He was a member of the Central Committee of the Party for 41 years (1980-2021) and for 24, its Political Bureau (1997-2021), being re-elected in April 2022. He was a Deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power from 1981 to 1986 and was elected again in 1993, until his death.
