Mikhail Kalinin was one of the original Bolshevik leaders. Kalinin became a member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1926.He was head of state of the USSR as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union from January 1936 until his death in 1946.

The city of Kaliningrad remains named in his honour despite the fall of the Soviet Union.
