The Communist Party of Chile reports that the newly elected Central Committee of the party has elected Lautaro Carmona and Bárbara Figueroa, respectively, as their president and general secretary. Carmona is a former general secretary and Figueroa has been the acting general secretary since 2023.

A total of 81 of the 96 members of the committee gathered Sunday, January 26 at the headquarters of the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores union and unanimously voted for both.

The election was made based on a proposal presented to the Plenary of the Central Committee and while there were no other candidates there were no votes against, nor any abstentions.

This came through a process begun at the XXVII Congress of the party, at which the 96 members of the committee were elected by a universal and secret vote of party members.

Lautaro Carmona and Bárbara Figueroa will serve for a period of four years.

The Plenary Session of the Central Committee will continue next week and will elect a new Political Commission.
