In a win that the Communist Party of Chile (CPC) is hailing as a "victory for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean", the leftist Broad Front (Frente Amplio) of Uruguay's presidential candidate Yamandu Orsi triumphed in the country's elections on Sunday, November 24.
His win ends five years of the right in power. Orsi, a former history teacher and two-term mayor, secured 49.8% of the vote, narrowly defeating Alvaro Delgado of the National Party. This brings the Broad Front back to power, a party that previously governed Uruguay for 15 years.
The CPC said that Orsi's triumph advances "the struggle of the peoples of our America and the Caribbean to overcome the neoliberal model, in defense of world peace and social justice."
