M. A. Baby, a Polit Bureau member since 2012, has been elected as the new General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M). This came on Sunday, March 6, the final day of the party's 24th Congress being held in Madurai. A new party Central Committee was also elected.

In his acceptance speech Baby said "Some people say communists do not have much scope. Rightist forces are strong throughout the world. In India, we have a nephew of Trump in Modi. But that is only one side. There is another side. In entire Latin America. Left and progressive forces are emerging. In Kerala LDF has made history by ensuring continuous rule."

Baby is a former Education and Culture Minister in Kerala and is the second General Secretary to come from that state.

He also laid out the tasks facing the party in a video posted on X.
