Nicolás Maduro inaugurated in Venezuela for a third term

Despite US and western imperialist attempts to destabilize the country and to, again, declare their own puppet candidate as the winner, Nicolás Maduro was inaugurated for a third consecutive term to Venezuela's highest office after winning the presidential election last year.

The "emotional ceremony full of symbolism and popular support" was held on Friday (January 10). Thousands of Venezuelans rallied and celebrated outside the ceremony that was held in Caracas at the National Assembly.

Vijay Prashad reports that Maduro "said that US imperialism and the Venezuelan oligarchy have been defeated. He is the president for another term till 2031. In a powerful speech, he said, 'I have not been placed as president by the US government or by the pro-imperialist governments of the Latin American right. The power I represent belongs to the people'."

After the official ceremony he "took an oath alongside the Venezuelan people" and he "pledged that this term would be marked by peace, prosperity, equality, and renewed democracy."

As the US Party for Socialism and Liberation Notes:

Like clockwork, in the week leading up to the swearing-in of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, U.S. officials and media outlets have reactivated their campaign of demonization and delegitimization against the sovereign institutions and people of Venezuela.
It is not up to Biden to decide who should be president of Venezuela.
The Venezuelan people have made their decision. What the Venezuelan people deserve (and have repeatedly demanded) is an end to the suffocating regime of U.S. sanctions against its economy which has devastated the country’s economy and inhibited the ability to acquire crucial goods for the people, causing large numbers of people to leave the country.
