The parking lot that is "the hub" of the community.
“This parking lot is the hub, it’s the heart of the community. It provides everybody an opportunity to partake in everything that’s here”.
In what may be one of the single most inane NIMBY quotes of all time -- and there is a lot of competition so this goes pretty low -- an opponent of an affordable housing project claimed that a parking lot in East York, Toronto is "the hub, it’s the heart of the community. It provides everybody an opportunity to partake in everything that’s here”.
Seriously.
Steve Bland, who opposes a project to redevelop a parking lot into a building with 64 units of affordable housing, actually said this.
This comes after Toronto was named the 5th least affordable housing market in the world, as the city is taking legal action against tiny shelters for the unhoused, and after a summer that saw vicious NIMBY campaigns in central Toronto and South Etobicoke.
Apparently NIMBY types really understand the need for affordable housing...as long as it is nowhere near them.
One might suggest that if this parking lot is the "hub" of the community there is not much of a community to talk about.
